journalism... (?)
As much as I have professed my absolute hatred for print journalism during this semester, I cannot deny — I am good at it. At least the very basics. For some reason, things like AP style guidelines and grammar have always been easy to stick. I cross out my ‘that’s and my passive verbs and I always put the subject before the verb in a citation. No brainer. I have a knack for telling stories. They make obvious patterns to me — jumping from unrelated quotes and facts. I am thinking about doing some freelance work for a tiny journal in Asheville — if not for the extra cash, for the extra weight of experience. I’m almost excited.
The article I wrote based on the interview I did with the head of PR at the Grove Park Inn (and other sources — she turned out to be rather inconsequential) got a 100. That validates the fact that I can present myself as a professional, I can take information from a source of caliber and turn the story into something news-worthy. I was so terrified of that interview, but I ended up getting a tour of the hotel, a chance to see something important about Asheville I’ve never seen before, learn a lot, and get a substantial interview afterward. I’m proud.
